How to Reach from Kolkata to Kalka / Chandigarh to Shimla

The journey you can start from Howrah station or Sealdah station. From Howrah railway station in Kolkata, you can go to Kalka by Kala mail train. The total fare for one side of Kalka mail in AC three tier around Rs. 1900 per person (recent tickets fare may vary). From Kalka, there is a train available called Burmese Kalka mail to Kalka. You can reach to Kalka by buying a ticket from Ambala Cantonment station.

It takes up to 2-3 hours to reach Kalka by Amritsar mail train from Ambala Cantonment station. It takes around 32 hours to reach Kalka by Kalka mail from Howrah. There are many toy trains available from Kalka to Shimla between 5 am to 12 am. The toy trains are Shibalik Deluxe Express, Himalayan Queen, and Kalka Shimla Rail Motor.

Toy train takes around 8 hours to reach Shimla from Kalka. Fare of the Toy train is Rs 250. One of the toy train, Shibalik Deluxe Express is connected to Kalka Mail. That means Kalka Mail will not leave Shibalik Deluxe Station till it reaches Kalka station. Always try to buy a toy train ticket in advance. Because, even if the Kalka Mail is late, there is no fear of missing the toy train.

Toy train moving in a very slow speed. However, this 96 km long track is worth remembering for a lifetime to see the surroundings scenery. The toy train passes through 16 tunnels and 6 bridges. Mall road is just less than one km away from Shimla Railway station.

Beside, Shimla can be reached by road from Kolkata via Delhi. The bus fare is Rs 1500 for AC Volvo and Rs 900 for non-Ac Volvo via Delhi. If you want, you can rent a taxi or a private car to come to Shimla.

Jakhu Hills and Jakhu Temple:

Jakhu Hills is the highest peak in Shimla and offers an attractive view of the surrounding landscape. The Jakhu Temple on the top of the hill is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. According to local estimates, Lord Hanuman rested here while the Sanjivani medicine was being carried up in the hill.

As a result, this place has become very popular among the devotees and travellers alike. It is very difficult to climb to the top of Jakhu temple in such cold weather. There are many problems may face like breathing.

Viceregal Lodge:

Located on the observatory hill, Viceregal Lodge was built in 1898 and was used as the official residence of Lord Dufferin, Viceroy of India. This place is currently the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. The lodge notonly provides an insight into the British rule in India, but also offers a stunning view of sunsets and sunrise.

Summer Hill:

Oak, cedar, rhododendron and many more have grown around summer hill. The Manorville Mansion is the most famous building in the area, as it is the place where Mahatma Gandhi visited Shimla.

The Ridge:

This is an open space, known as the most activity centre of Shimla. The Ridge has a number of important historical landmarks and offers a variety of activities as well as a beautiful view of surrounding mountains. This part of the city is also very important for the public life of Shimla, as the reservoir bellow it is responsible for water supply in a major part of the city.

Mall road is very popular among tourists as a large number of Shimla landmarks are located here. It is also known as the commercial hub of Shimla as there are so many number of restaurant, clubs, bars and shops present to entertain you.

Christ Church was built in 1844 and is the second oldest church in North India. Christ Church is located on the ridge and is very popular with tourist for its Elizabeth architecture and its designed glass windows. The church also has a pipe organ, which is considered to be one of the largest in the country. It is ideal for those who are spiritual.

St. Michael’s Cathedral: 

St. Michael’s Church was built in 1850. It is the first Catholic Church in Shimla. It has five marble altars brought from Italy in 1855. The church also has nice looking designed glass windows.

Geaty Theatre:

This Theatre was built in 18th century to entertain the British in Shimla. The new architecture of the building is a beautiful sight for the cherished eye. There is an art gallery with an exhibition meeting and many other facilities. This is one of the must visit place for any art lover.

Tattapani:

Sulfurns warm springs located in Tattapani, a few kilometres away from Shimla, are considered by many to have medicinal benefits and that is why Tattapani is very popular place for medical tourists. In addition to the warm springs, the cold waters of the Shatadru River provide the opportunity for river rafting. Now Tatpani has lost its beauty due to the official dam.

Kotgarh:

Kotgarh, a few kilometer away from Shimla, is located on the ancient Hindustan-Tibet road and is also famous for its apple orchards. Kotgarh is the site of the first commercial orchard in Himachal Pradesh in 1914. Latter, Kotgarh actually became one of the major apple exporters in Himachal Pradesh.

Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary:

Spread over an area of 10.25 square km, the sanctuary is the home to coniferous forests, steep terrain and small streams. Located 12 km east of Shimla, it is a safe haven for brown bears, black deer, Indian red foxes and striped hyenas.

Kufri:

Kufri is a small hill station in Shimla district in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The Kufri city is situated at a distance of 13 km from the city of Shimla city on National Highway 22. The word “Kufri” comes from the local word “kufr”, which means “lake”. Here is the “Himalayan Wildlife Zoo”. Interestingly, this area was unknown to the people before 1819, even two hundred years ago.

A group of English tourist travelled through thr forest and discovered this place of immense beauty. The famous winter sports festival is organized in February in every year by Himachal tourism. If you wish to climb to the top of Kufri, you have to take a ride of horse. The rent of a horse is Rs. 500 per person.

Fagu Valley:

Fagu valley is one of the tourist centres located at an altitude of about 2500 meter and six kilometre from Kufri. Fagu is another desired with tourists from home and abroad for winter sports. There is a beautiful view of the “Giri Valley” from the top of Fagur.

Stay in Shimla:

Staying in Shimla is not costlier. Budget hotels are available. You can get a hotel in the vicinity of Mall Road or Lakkar Bazar for between Rs 800-1500. You can go for higher price hotels also.

Food in Shimla:

Breakfast:

Always try to manage the breakfast to take in the hotel, where you are staying. If it takes a little longer, agree that one. Because you don’t want to go outside in the cold at seven in the morning. You have to make breakfast with potato paratha, fried bread, Maggie, noodles and tea.

Lunch / Dinner:

If you want to eat rice, eat it in Thali system. You will get both Veg / Non-veg. It will be better to eat veg thali. Because cooking fish and meat is not good at all. You can’t at it. It will just be wasted.
